WB Orientation and Opening Information

WESTERN BROWN ANNOUNCES SCHOOL OPENING INFORMATION

Mrs. Peggy McKinney, Superintendent of Western Brown Local Schools, has announced the following information pertaining to the opening of the 2013-2014 school year.  The first day for students enrolled in grades 1-12 is August 21st .   Regular kindergarten schedule will start on Wednesday, August 28th.

Orientation at the individual buildings will be held as follows:  Monday, August 19th from 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. in each of the buildings.  Freshman orientation will begin at 5:00 p.m. in the high school gymnasium.   Upper classmen may pick up their schedules any time between the hours of 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. at the front of the high school building.

School bus transportation has been reinstated for grades K-8.  Transportation is not being provided for high school students enrolled in grades 9-12 residing inside the five (5) mile driving distance of the building attended.  Questions regarding school bus transportation should be directed to the Transportation Department at 937-444-2044 extension 25020.

Students may enter the buildings and are dismissed in accordance with the following time schedules:  Mount Orab Middle School – 7:35 a.m.-2:20 p.m.; Western Brown High School – 7:45 a.m.-2:30 p.m.; Hamersville Elementary & Middle School – 8:55 a.m.-3:40 p.m.; Mount Orab Elementary School – 9:00 a.m.-3:45 p.m.

Kindergarten students must be immunized as mandated by the requirements set forth in the guidelines of the Ohio Department of Health.  Students entering grade 7 must be inoculated with a Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis) shot.  Students not having the required immunizations within 30 days after the start of school will be excluded from attending school until such time the required immunizations are up-to-date.  Students requiring Immunization shots may be inoculated by their primary care physician or at the Brown County Department of Health.

All students new to the district, regardless of the building attended, must register with Genda Pope, Registrar, at Mount Orab Middle School between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.  The following documents must be presented when registering:  birth certificate, social security card, immunization records, if applicable, report card from former school of attendance and any court papers specifying the custodial parent as well a copy of a current Individualized Education Plan (IEP) in place for a special needs student.  Western Brown may accept open enrollment students currently not an IEP prior to the October deadline.

Breakfast is available at a cost of $.25 cents at each of the four (4) buildings.  Serving breakfast will begin on Thursday, August 22nd in the elementary and middle schools and on Monday, August 26th at the high school.  Nutritious Type A cafeteria lunches are served in each building at a cost of $2.25 for grades Pre-K through 8; $2.50 for grades 9-12; extra milk is $.35 cents.  Ala carte lunch items are available only at the high school.

 A public hearing will be held on August 19th from 5:00-6:00 p.m. at Mount Orab Elementary School to discuss how Western Brown Local Schools intends to spend their IDEA Part B funds for special education.  Program participants and parents will have an opportunity for comments and input.

Title 1 funding this year will fund our All Day Every Day Kindergarten Program at Mt. Orab Elementary and Hamersville Elementary.  Information Sessions will be conducted in October within the PTO meetings at both buildings.
